Nora Ephron (May 19, 1941 – June 26, 2012)

NORA EPHRON was a friend of mine. As anyone who has seen her films or read her books knows, she was funny and briliant and irreverent. In private life, she was kind and generous, yet still tart-tongued. She was loving, but always let you know what she thought and why she loved what she loved. I admired her forthrightness and her tough confidence. And I loved that she could recite poems by heart! She loved poetry so much. She once learned a funny poem of mine ("the Parrot") and recited it to her husband, Nick. She showed me how to write a screenplay and she recommended the best doctors in L.A. for me and my daughter - she never stopped giving to her friends. I'm still trying to get my mind around her absence: Nora, I cannot take in that you are gone. Nora, stay. Till the candle burns down, till the moon comes up. Stay Nora, in the last email you sent to me - in late May - looking forward to summer, looking forward to a few more minutes, a few more breaths, the candle burning.
